Supporting Compliance with EEMUA 231

Protect people, plant & planet with evidence‑based mechanical‑integrity services.

What is EEMUA 231?

EEMUA – the Engineering Equipment & Materials Users’ Association – is a UK‑based, not‑for‑profit body that publishes practical engineering guidance for plant owners and operators.
EEMUA 231, The Mechanical Integrity of Plant Containing Hazardous Substances, sets a risk‑based framework for keeping tanks, pipework and breather valves fit‑for‑purpose throughout their life. It complements UK regulations such as PSSR, PUWER and COMAH by focusing on:

  • Written Schemes of Examination (WSE)
  • Competent Integrity Assessor roles
  • Data‑driven inspection intervals
  • Robust, auditable records for regulators and insurers

Maintenance & Inspection

Why choose Assentech?

At Assentech, we help industrial facilities maintain compliance with EEMUA 231. This guidance outlines best practice for managing the integrity of equipment used to store or process dangerous materials, with a focus on effective examination, testing, and lifecycle oversight of containment systems such as tanks, pipework, and breather valves.

How We Help

1. Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) Support

A well-structured Written Scheme of Examination is at the heart of EEMUA 231 compliance. We can:

  • Develop asset-specific WSEs for breather valves and atmospheric storage systems
  • Review and update existing schemes based on actual operating conditions and degradation risks
  • Advise on inspection intervals, examination methods, and decision-making criteria

2. High-Integrity Examination and Valve Testing

Our proprietary Vent-Less® test bench replicates real-world conditions to assess breather valve performance. This helps:

  • Detect leaks and quantify emissions
  • Verify operational compliance and functionality
  • Generate clear, evidence-based reports to support fitness-for-service evaluations

3. Supporting the Integrity Assessor Role

  • Act as your named Integrity Assessor or mentor internal personnel (EEMUA 231 §7)
  • Collaborate with your PSSR Competent Person and insurers
  • Provide impartial repair, re‑rating or retirement recommendations backed by data

4. Training & Competency Building

We equip site teams with the skills and knowledge needed to uphold mechanical integrity through:

  • Practical training on valve maintenance, degradation risks, and emissions management
  • Insight into risk-based inspection strategies
  • Guidance on using data from testing to inform safe operating decisions

5. Compliance Documentation & Audit Readiness

Our services also support your wider compliance and governance needs by:

  • Producing structured, regulator-ready documentation
  • Aligning testing and inspection with COMAH, PSSR, PUWER, and EEMUA 231 expectations
  • Providing clear audit trails for inspections, repairs, and integrity assessments
